About the Director of Choirs
Gary Van Essen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music from Towson University, where his capstone project was a lecture recital of the Fauré Requiem. The 24-25 school year is his 11th year at Arundel High School. At Arundel he has served as a math teacher, as the math and computer science department chairperson, and more recently as the director of choirs. Under his leadership, which began in 2023, the choral program has increased in size by more than 50%. In his first year as director of choirs, the Concert Choir received a superior rating at County Festival. Mr. Van Essen also holds holds a Master of Arts degree from Towson University, an Education Specialist degree from George Washington University, and a Doctor of Education degree from Gwynedd Mercy University. He is the recipient of the 2020 Central Maryland Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year award and the 2024 STEM Teacher of Excellence award. He has worked as a professional church musician since the age of 15 and has directed choirs of all ages. Currently he is the Minister of Music at Christ Church, Kent Island (Episcopal).
